Atlanta Falcons: Myles Jack, LB – UCLA

McShay has the Falcons taking the versatile UCLA player athlete with the 14th pick in Round 1. That’s too early for a guy who has serious durability issues. He tore his ACL in September and while that should give him enough time to regain full health before the NFL season, there are still have serious concerns.

I also don’t like the chatter that prior this injury Jack was considering sitting out to make sure he wouldn’t get hurt before the draft rolled around. That kind of attitude might be smart business, but if I’m the Falcons I don’t need my linebackers to be business moguls. I want guys who love the game of football and who play with reckless abandon on the field. Jack is great on film, but the decisions he makes off the field lend themselves to a lot of heartburn.

Also, adding a linebacker might not be the smartest move for Atlanta in the first round. They need to provide Matt Ryan some more help either along the offensive line or at a skill position. Roddy White can’t play opposite Julie Jones forever and they certainly could use a new tight end weapon to bail Ryan out when he’s pressured.

All-in-all, there are too many questions about Jack’s mental makeup to feel good about this selection. The Falcons are picking in the middle of Round 1 for a reason. They should keep it a lot simpler than selecting a guy this complicated.
