MLB Trade Rumors: Nationals in pursuit of Brandon Phillips
The Washington Nationals are reportedly interested in Brandon Phillips.
With the Cincinnati Reds trading away third baseman Todd Frazier today to the Chicago White Sox, the next domino in the deconstruction of their current roster could have been made much clearer, and it could revolved around veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips.
As a part of the three-team deal, the Reds received top infield prospect Jose Peraza from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peraza could be ready to contribute immediately at second base this summer for the Reds, so it makes that much more sense that Cincinnati could be nearing a deal with the Washington Nationals for their incumbent second baseman in Phlllips.
The Nationals have been heavy in the market for infield upgrades this winter, having dealt away second baseman Yunel Escobar to the Anaheim Angels and preparing to lose shortstop Ian Desmond to free agency as well. They were one of the finalists for Ben Zobrist last week, before the veteran agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs.
The Nationals interest in Phillips is complicated by the fact that Phillips has 10/5 veto rights to any trade, as he is a ten year MLB veteran and has spent more than five years with the Reds.
Regardless of this, the two teams have continued talks towards a deal. The return for Phillips would be a package of prospects and the Nationals would likely take on the full $27 million due to the 34-year-old second baseman through 2017.
In addition to continuing to be a top-tier defender at second base, Phillips is coming off of a resurgent season at the plate as well. He posted a .294 average, along with 12 home runs, 23 stolen bases (in 26 opportunities) and knocked in 70 runs. His batting average and .328 on-base percentage were both four and three year highs, respectively.
