Teams don’t become good in the NFL without taking some risks. The Carolina Panthers know this as much as anybody. They took a risk on Cam Newton when selecting him first overall four years ago. They took a risk on Ron Rivera making him their head coach. They took a risk on keeping Thomas Davis despite a string of injury setbacks.

What it comes down to is patience and trusting that the coaching, discipline and team-first mentality will get the most from a player. Besides, being a winning team affords a GM to take long, calculated chances on highly-talented players who might not be achieving their full potential in college. That is the extent of this selection.

Shawn Oakman, just from a physical standpoint is a freak of nature. He’s 6’9, looks like a power forward in the NBA, and runs with the speed and agility of a linebacker. He’s got the long arms and brute strength all great pass rushers need. What he doesn’t have is a consistent motor. He needs to learn to play aggressively on every snap. Rivera has proven himself a great motivator, so this is his kind of challenge.
. DE. Baylor. Shawn Oakman. 63. player. 87
