The Philadelphia 76ers can’t even go about hitting a buzzer-beater properly

The Philadelphia 76ers, the worst team in the NBA at this point in the season, haven’t had much to celebrate this season and, in fact, it’s been pretty bleak. There might not be any better instance of just how bleak than the fact that they even messed up hitting a buzzer-beater against the New York Knicks.

With time winding down in the first quarter, Sixers forward Jerami Grant got a rebound and turned to take the ball the other way. Seeing the time running down, he heaved a shot from beyond half-court that was far from ever having a chance to go down. However, Grant also happened to shoot about three seconds too early, allowing guard T.J. McConnell to grab the board and put up a lay-up before the buzzer:

Two points is two points, but there is nothing more defining of this Sixers team than this play. Shooting a buzzer-beater too early is laughable enough, but the fact that Grant’s was so early that his teammate had time to grab a rebound and then hit the putback lay-up is just mind-boggling.

Only in Philadelphia would they be able hit a buzzer-beater and still manage to be laughed at by NBA fans. We’ll just assume that this, too, is part of the process.
