Round 3: Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State

It’s time to get some youth at the quarterback position in Dallas. Sure, head coach Jason Garrett seems to think you have to be over 30 to play the position (see Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassell as their primary backups) but the play of their veteran guys in 2015 should be enough to sway the team’s philosophy.

Wentz played at a small college, but so did the man he would be sitting behind for the next few years in Tony Romo. The young quarterback has prototypical NFL size at 6’6″ and 235 pounds, plus he is part of a winning program which has the FCS Division I National Championship four straight seasons.

The senior signal caller has 4,918 yards with 44 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions in his four years at NDSU. A broken wrist ended his senior season early, but his most impressive year came the year before.

As a junior, Wentz completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,111 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He had 16 touchdowns and just two picks in 2015 before the wrist injury sent him to the sidelines.

In Dallas, Wentz would have time to learn behind a good starter in Romo, while also serving as a backup that may actually be able to throw a pass more than four yards down field. If the Matt Cassel error…I mean era, hasn’t convinced Jerry Jones and company to draft a quarterback finally, nothing will.
