Saturday’s Camellia Bowl between Ohio and Appalachian State was better than advertised.
31. 2391. 29. 2373. Final
Many people were expecting a close game throughout for the 2015 Camellia Bowl, but the Ohio Bobcats surprised, coming out red-hot and never really letting up for the most part.
Although the Bobcats were playing without starting quarterback Derrius Vick for the third straight game, JD Sprague really stepped in and played well through the first half. His numbers weren’t eye-popping, by any means, but the Bobcats really benefited from his consistent play. He had two big turnovers in the second half, though.
It was clear that Appalachian State’s run defense was going to stall the Bobcats and, therefore, Sprague would have to put up some stellar numbers, but it was the Bobcats’ opportunistic defense that did the job. Ohio scored on two defensive touchdowns — one on an interception return by Quentin Poling in the first half and another on a fumble return by Jovon Johnson in the second half.
The game seemed to be going nowhere but the Bobcats’ way until the fourth quarter when the Mountaineers bursted ahead to a 28-24 lead. A safety and field goal gave Ohio the lead back with just under two minutes left in the game.
A last-second field goal was the deciding factor for Appalachian State and the Mountaineers ended up with a 31-29 victory.
Three Stars
Appalachian State’s Marcus Cox had a solid day on the ground, rushing the ball 23 times for 165 yards and a touchdown. He proved to be the top performer in the Camellia Bowl.
Jovon Johnson had the play of the game on defense for the Bobcats, stripping the ball from an Appalachian State receiver and taking it 45 yards to the house.
Jalin Moore also had a nice day running the ball, finishing with 91 yards on just 13 carries as the Mountaineers finished with 303 total rushing yards.
