10. “The Human Highlight Reel” Dominique Wilkins
Amidst one of the best eras in the history of the NBA for high-flyers, the dominant rivalry in that regard (specifically in regards to the Slam Dunk Contest) was between Michael Jordan and Atlanta Hawks star Dominique Wilkins. His ability to throw down just unbelievable dunks and wow the crowd with regularity earned him the simple yet effective nickname of “The Human Highlight Reel.”
There’s not too much to unpack in terms of what the nickname means because it’s pretty self-explanatory and not bathed in vague implications like many other nicknames on this list. Wilkins is a human. Wilkins produces highlights on a frequent basis. It’s really that simple and doesn’t exactly scream deeper meaning. However, simplicity shouldn’t lessen the effectiveness of the nickname in describing just how amazing ‘Nique was when he was in his prime with the Hawks.
Wilkins’ could absolutely soar when he had the room to attack the rim in a way that just didn’t seem possible. Just for good measure, he never shied away from adding a little flair to his efforts while doing so, either. Moreover, he developed into an all-around big-time performer over his career, simply giving “The Human Highlight Reel” even more highlights to his credit.
