According to a report, Boston University is dealing with a gambling scandal that could involve multiple players.

Boston University Hockey is dealing with a major off-the-ice incident right now, as the university prepares for a season where they’d like to bring home a championship.

Junior Nick Roberto was recently suspended for a minor infraction of team rules, but now it appears that it is much bigger than what the team reported as minor.

According to College Hockey New, Roberto will miss the rest of the season for “gambling activities.”

"In a statement released to CHN today, the University said, “Beyond confirming that Mr. Roberto will not play for the Boston University hockey team this season, federal privacy laws prevent us from discussing his status.“However, we can say that several months ago, we heard rumors that a BU hockey player had engaged in gambling. Although the rumors did not involve gambling on either college or professional hockey games, we nonetheless immediately conducted a thorough investigation and turned the results over to the appropriate authorities at the NCAA. Based on that investigation, the NCAA made its own findings and took remedial action, and we would refer you to that organization for further information.”"

What’s even worse for Boston University is that it appears that Roberto is not the only player involved with gambling, which would mean others are involved and then there is no guessing just how big this potential scandal could get and the effects that it could have on a top college hockey program, which produces many top hockey prospects.

ESPN’s Jeff Cox reported that the gambling happened last season and that it did not involve betting on college hockey, which means his betting had no influence on any of the games.

It’s important to note that Roberto isn’t currently being investigated by Law Enforcement and is still a member of the team and the university.

It’s not clear if anyone else is involved quite yet, and if so, if they are members of the current roster or if they graduated last year.

This whole thing could be a non-issue if they weren’t betting on anything that could affect the outcomes of their games, and it sounds like they weren’t, but it also sounds like the hockey team could have a gambling problem.

This is a strange story to keep an eye on.
