Is Drew Brees done for the season?
According to a report, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has torn plantar fascia in his right foot. Is his season over?
The New Orleans Saints were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, and on Monday night, the team dropped a tough game at home against the Detroit Lions. Things just never bounced the Saints way on Monday, and their quarterback Drew Brees suffered an injury to his right foot.
While Brees was able to finish the game strong, it didn’t look like he was having the same accuracy on his passes that he normally has out there. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Brees has a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.
While conventional wisdom would say that Brees is finally done playing for the season, as his team is officially eliminated from playoff contention, he still wants to play the final two games of the season, according to Werder.
Brees had his NFL-record 10th consecutive season of 4,000+ yards this year and crossed over the 60,000-yard mark for all-time passing yards. He still wants to climb up the record boards and keep playing for the Saints, as they will have big off-season decisions ahead on the future of the franchise, as their decade of dominant football has come to an end.
Should Brees play the final two games of the season?
While he wants to play the last two games and have his team finish strong on the year, there’s no sense in going out there and playing if he can’t make the accurate throws to his receivers. It was evident on Monday night, that his passes weren’t crisp and put in the right spot like they normally are.
The Saints are in a spot, where if Brees and head coach Sean Payton are going to remain a dynamic duo down in the Superdome, that they are probably better off resting him and letting him sit the rest of the season. At 36 years old, he is on the older side of things now, and might not be as lucky if he further injures that foot.
It’s hard to tell a competitor like Brees when he has to sit and not play, but he’s also a smart quarterback and probably realizes being healthy and perhaps allowing someone who might be able to make those throws play right now, could be potentially better at the moment for the Saints franchise. It’s two games left in the season, they have nothing to lose by resting their quarterback.
