Chelsea FC have contacted the Montreal Impact about bringing back former player Didier Drogba in a coaching role.

With the coaching staff at Chelsea undergoing an overhaul, interim manager Guus Hiddink has contacted the MLS’ Montreal Impact in the hopes of bringing back Didier Drogba to serve in a coaching role. It was speculated that would be the case when he was spotted at a Chelsea game with Roman Abramovich. The Impact have confirmed this on their official Twitter account:

The former Chelsea player still has one year remaining on his deal in Montreal. Despite the fact that he came in and lit up the MLS, he’s set to turn 38 at the start of next season and it is unlikely that he can keep up a high level of play over the course of a full season. Regardless, the Impact will not willingly let go of him after he helped get the team to the playoffs and beat Toronto FC in the first round.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are going through one of their worst seasons in recent memory, and they need a morale boost after firing Jose Mourinho midseason. Their season is not lost, since the club can still qualify for Europe if they finish in the top 6 or win the FA Cup, both of which remain possible. Drogba joining the coaching staff could go a long way to motivating the players to do so.

One of the biggest reasons for Chelsea’s success last season was the signing of Didier Drogba and the difference he made in the dressing room. The Ivorian is regarded by Chelsea fans as one of the best players in club history and a return to Stamford Bridge would be fitting at this stage of his career.
