6th Round – #180 overall

Elijah Shumate might develop into a nice safety. Playing with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the youngster has shown that he can play with good range and quickness. Notre Dame had one of the better defenses in college football and plenty of that credit can be given to Shumate. The Chiefs have a litany of good players at that position but there are some danger signs ahead.

Shumate could step in for either Husain Abdullah or Tyvon Branch. Both have been playing really well for Kansas City but are hitting the free-agent market and are in line to be paid well. Branch came to the Chiefs on a one-year deal to prove his worth and has done so in a major way, scoring two touchdowns in the past three weeks. Meanwhile, Abdullah has been very good for the past three seasons.

Then there is the case of Eric Berry. Kansas City has been incredible for the Chiefs since being drafted fifth-overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. Last year, Berry had to leave the team because he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Miraculously, Berry was able to return to the team at the start of training camp this year and did not miss a beat. Berry is a free agent this offseason, but don’t expect the Chiefs to let him leave.
