Here are all the goals from Southampton’s four goal demolition of Arsenal.
For Arsenal, this is the worst performance of the season. For Southampton, it’s the best. The Gunners were hoping to go top of the Premier League after Leicester’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool, while Southampton were simply hoping to avoid a battering a regain some of their shattered confidence. Well, that was the least of their issues, as they went on to utterly destroy the best team in the league right now, smashing four past the title hopefuls.
The best of the goals, by miles, was the opening goal by little known right back Cuco Martina. Coming early in the first half, the utterly stupendous strike has a claim to be goal of the season, nevermind goal of the game. It is an absolute stunner. With the outside of the wand of his right foot, he begins his Roberto Carlos impression by setting his shot two feet outside the far post and nestles the ball into the bottom corner.
The second goal came with Arsenal pressing forward early in the second half, and put the game well within Southampton’s grasp. With the Gunner searching for the elusive equalizer, the ball broke to Shane Long, who released his strike partner, Saido Mane down the right channel. Mane then layed the ball on a plate for Long who simply slotted past the helpless Petr Cech.

Southampton, however, had plans to add to Arsenal’s misery. After a controversial corner was awarded the Saints’ way, Ryan Bertrand swings the ball into the near post, and with Arsenal’s atrocious zonal marking system, Fonte has a clear run at the ball and simply heads it into the near post from within the six yard box.
Apparently three wasn’t enough for the Saints, as in extra time they really rubbed the salt in Arsenal’s wounds, with Shane Long adding to his earlier goal. Substitute Dusan Tadic collected the ball in midfield, played a beautifully weighted ball, splitting Koscielny and Mertesacker, for Long to run onto, take a touch to set himself and poke past Petr Cech. The final nail in Arsenal’s coffin!
