NFL Owners: The 5 worst in professional football
By Randy Gurzi
4. Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts
For Indianapolis Colts owner, win-loss records can be disregarded because he has had the great fortune of featuring Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck at quarterback, which can negate any poor management.
Need proof that Manning was perfume to Irsay’s pig-like ownership? After winning one Super Bowl and losing in another, the team saw their nine-season playoff streak end when Peyton injured his neck and needed surgery.
Without Manning at the helm, Indy managed only two wins all season, which was proof that their management failed miserably to build a team around one of the best quarterbacks of all-time. The 2011 Colts looked like an expansion team as they struggled all year, and the reward was being able to draft Andrew Luck as Manning’s successor.
So naturally Irsay continues to rack up wins, thanks again mostly to the stellar quarterback play they feature. If it wasn’t for dumb luck, Irsay would have no luck on the football field.
As for off the field, his luck is just as good. The Colts owner was born into a rich family, in fact his father Robert Irsay was the team’s owner before him. After his death in 1997, the younger Irsay won a legal battle with his stepmother to gain ownership of the franchise. In 1998, he landed Manning which made him look like he knew what he was doing.
Off the field, Irsay has done nothing to help his team or the NFL. In 2014, he was arrested and charged with four felonies, including a DWI. In a league where players are harshly punished, Irsay received a slap-on-the-wrist with a six-game suspension and a $500,000 fine.
The NFL says owners should be held to a higher standard, yet Irsay was allowed to skate and still represent the league despite being such a poor ambassador for the game. All this is without even addressing his terrible wardrobe or incredibly weird rants on Twitter.
