23. 2004 Seattle Seahawks (9-7)

Another team in the mid 2000s run for the Seattle Seahawks finds its way onto this list in the form of the 2004 squad. It was the same cast of players on the offensive end that carried the team to the playoffs in 2004 that did so in 2006. However, this team was slightly worse despite the offense actually being slightly better.

Matt Hasselbeck was the quarterback that he essentially was for every season in his prime, finishing the season throwing for 3,382 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions on the year. Shaun Alexander was a monster as well as he averaged 4.8 yards per carry in Seattle and found his way into the end zone 16 times. In comparison to the 2006 team that also appears on this list, the offense in 2004 was notably more impressive and potent.

However, the defense of the 2004 Seahawks was definitively worse. That seems like a strange thing to say considering the vaunted defenses of the current teams in Seattle, but they were one of the worst units in the league back in 2004. They finished at 9-7 in the regular season to win a weak NFC West, but they were exposed in the postseason by a team in their division in the St. Louis Rams as they allowed 27 points and their offense couldn’t do enough to keep up.
