NFL 2015: Team-by-team grades
San Diego Chargers
Grade: F
What went right: The season has finally reached its final week? The only real bright spot for this team was the play of quarterback Philip Rivers, who continues to be prolific. Before the season began, general manager Tom Telesco signed Rivers to a four-year extension, and the veteran responded with a career season. Rivers threw for 4,564 yards and 27 touchdowns through the first 16 weeks and could hit 5,000 with a major Week 17 contest.
What went wrong: San Diego was crushed by injuries and the defense is not nearly good enough to get the job done on a consistent basis. The Chargers have Corey Liuget at defensive end but the rest of the front seven is something out of a horror show. Offensively, rookie running back and first-round pick Melvin Gordon, who finished with only 641 rushing yards and 3.5 yards per carry without a touchdown.
Offseason expectations: First off, this team is likely leaving San Diego for Los Angeles, where the franchise actually began play in the American Football League in 1960. From there, it might be best for the Chargers to fire both Telesco and head coach Mike McCoy. The team has to get some consistency and find playmakers in the front seven, and it starts in free agency come March.
