Former NFL head coach Mike Holmgren would be interested if the 49ers head coaching job become open.

After a season of disappointment and a massive overhaul to the roster, thanks in part to several retirements and a head coach leaving, the San Francisco 49ers are probably due for more change in the off-season.

One change will be probably be at the head coaching position, where current head coach Jim Tomsula has constantly looked over-matched on a weekly basis.

Should the 49ers move on from Tomsula, which could be a very real possibility, there is one former head coach that is very interested in the opening at head coach for the 49ers.

According to Robert Klemko, former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren would be interested in the 49ers’ head coaching availability.

Holmgren previously had an unsuccessful stint as the president of the Cleveland Browns. His work as a head coach can’t be denied however. He took Green Bay to back-to-back Super Bowls and winning one of them as head coach of the team.

When he was the coach of the Seahawks, he took the team to their first ever Super Bowl, where they lost in a tough game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His coaching success speaks for itself and if the 49ers are going to get the ship righted after a disaster of a year, they might need a voice who has been there and done that before.

Hiring a first-time coach in Tomsula clearly hasn’t worked out for the franchise. The failures of team this year, some of which blindsided the franchise that they weren’t prepared for, is going to probably bring sweeping changes.

Holmgren coached for the 49ers under the great Bill Walsh and it could be a very welcomed return to a franchise that could use a name at head coach right now.
