Baker Mayfield and Gary Patterson exchange words pre Orange Bowl over Mayfield’s TCU recruiting.

Baker Mayfield starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, is more than ready for his playoff matchup vs Clemson in a few days. Mayfield was never offered a scholarship coming out of high school, but was a walk on at Texas Tech and his current school: Oklahoma. Mayfield is a player who likes to play with a chip on his shoulder, hence the reason for a few choice words towards Texas Christian University (TCU) over recruiting him a few years back.

In Monday’s Orange Bowl media day session, Mayfield offered this according to CBS Sports when asked about being recruited out of high school, and which school hurt the most, “‘TCU,’ he replied without hesitation. “They told me they were gonna offer me a scholarship and kind of drug it out, and I told other schools I wasn’t interested because I thought I was going to go there, and I truly believed they were going to offer me because they told me that. They disappointed me and kind of hung me out to dry right before signing day.”

Gary Patterson the head football coach for TCU was quick to fire back at Mayfield about the recruiting process that Mayfield went through, bringing in defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow to talk about his recruiting of Mayfield. Patterson even brought up Mayfield’s father in the detailing of the recruiting process. Patterson was not shy about what he believed happened with Mayfield.

Ultimately, this battle of words gets Mayfield more fired up for his Orange Bowl showdown, and sets the stage for a returning Quarterback ready to face off against TCU next season. The story lines for next season’s Big 12 are here already, and this time it may be about more than a conference championship game.
