There has been a lot of talk about the Miami Marlins potentially trading Jose Fernandez this offseason, but agent Scott Boras doesn’t see it as a likely move.

At the onset of December, the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings were beset with rumors that the Miami Marlins were openly listening to offers for stud starting pitcher Jose Fernandez. At the time, the thought of such a move seemed implausible, given that teams don’t trade 23-year-old aces that are under control for three more seasons through salary arbitration.

Now we have a bit more clarity.

Speaking on MLB Network Radio on Tuesday, Fernandez’s agent Scott Boras took to the airwaves and put the rumors to rest. He doesn’t expect his client to be traded this winter and fully expects Fernandez will be healthy and pitching for the Marlins again in 2016.

Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014 after just eight starts, but returned in July 2015 and looked strong. In 11 starts for the Marlins, Fernandez posted a dominant 6-1 record with a 2.92 ERA, a 2.24 FIP, and an 11.0 K/9 ratio. Needless to say, the Marlins will be in no hurry to move him.

That showed immensely during the Winter Meetings, as news of the prospective packages the Marlins had asked of other teams started to leak. Word of Miami asking the Los Angeles Dodgers for Corey Seager, Julio Urias, Joc Pederson, and more, and asking the Boston Red Sox for Mookie Betts, Yoan Moncada, Eduardo Rodriguez, and much more, showed just how high the Marlins were setting the bar. In fact, it was enough to convince the Arizona Diamondbacks to pony up Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair, and 2015 overall pick Dansby Swanson to land Shelby Miller from the Atlanta Braves.

With such a high asking price, the Marlins have basically let other teams know they have no intention of moving Jose Fernandez unless they hit with a “Herschel Walker” type offer, one they simply cannot refuse and can reshape a franchise.

That offer isn’t likely to come in from any team in this new era of prospect valuation. No one is worth that type of haul, even the great Jose Fernandez.
