Rafa Benitez: A campaign against Real Madrid
Rafa Benitez is not happy with the situation at Real Madrid, and claims there is a campaign against himself, the club, and the president, Florentino Perez.
Rafa Benitez always dreamed of one day coaching at Real Madrid. However, the grass is not always greener on the other side, and the Spanish tactician has had a plethora of issues to deal with since arriving to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid currently sit third in the La Liga table, and have already been eliminated from the Copa del Rey after fielding an ineligible player against Cadiz. The club were embarrassed 4-0 at home against their bitter rivals, Barcelona, in November, and Benitez has yet to gain the confidence of the fans or media.
On Tuesday, speaking at a press conference before his team hosts Real Sociedad on Wednesday Benitez launched an attack on the media.
"“It is clear there is a campaign against Madrid, against Florentino and against me,” he said. “Everything that happens here is criticized or manipulated – anyone can appreciate this. I spent 11 years outside of Spain and my career is questioned. For this reason we know that all of us have to give more, starting with me. “I knew from the start I was coming to a club where everything is magnified. It is a big club and there are positives and negatives to that. “I have been 30 years in the dugout and had more than 1,400 games so I know how the world of football is and what Real Madrid mean. To solve it you have to concentrate on the job. I know I cannot let myself get distracted.“I have spoken with Jose Angel Sanchez and with the president. My relationship with them is normal, friendly. The president was here today talking with me and the players.“The team is much better than what people think – that has been reflected in some of the matches but we have to make sure that is shown in every game.”"
Benitez arrived to Madrid, after leaving Napoli in the summer. The former Liverpool boss spent two seasons with the Partenopei in Serie A, but failed to get the club to where they wanted to be. His woes have only continued at Real Madrid, with rumors already running rampant that he could be on his way out.
