Round One: Jared Goff, Quarterback, California

Let’s not cut any corners here. St. Louis needs nothing else more than a quarterback, and Cal’s Jared Goff will likely be available when the Rams are projected to select.

There are many NFL teams at the bottom of the list that have some sort of a project at the quarterback position. This tampers down the demand for taking a top quarterback No. 1 overall. In previous years – look no further than the 2015 draft – quarterbacks were taken immediately due to the amount of teams needing one. Thankfully for the Rams, that is not the case in 2016.

Although Memphis’ Paxton Lynch is arguably the best quarterback prospect available in the draft, Goff is a close second. Goff finally broke 4,000 passing yards this season, but never had less than 3,500 yards passing in any of his three years as the starter for the Golden Bears. He’s had a completion percentage above 60 percent in each of his three seasons and has thrown 30 or more touchdowns in his previous two campaigns.

The only knock on Goff is his size. At only 215 pounds, he could stand to put on a bit more weight. In addition, his offensive line has lacked during his years at Cal. He still has to learn and grow as a quarterback. His lack of size could put the Rams in another Sam Bradford-esque situation.

However, Goff is likely the most accurate passer and smartest quarterback in the draft. He’s one of the more seasoned gunslingers coming out of this year’s class and has pro-ready talent. The Rams must select a quarterback, and Goff is a solid choice.

Keep in mind, the last great quarterback who came out of Cal has done pretty well.
