Cam Newton’s New Year’s resolution: ‘New year, same me’
By John Buhler
Cam Newton plans on doing much of the same in 2016 as he did in 2015.
Cam Newton had a great 2015. He’s the front-runner for NFL MVP. His Carolina Panthers are 14-1 and are ready to make some noise in the NFC Playoffs, with serious Super Bowl 50 aspirations. It makes sense that Newton doesn’t want to change much.
When asked about his New Year’s resolution, Newton told Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer, “My New Year’s Resolution is: New year, same me.”
Newton probably meant that he wants to continue to play at an elite level at quarterback and lead the Panthers to the NFC Playoffs for the fourth straight season in 2016, but some of Newton’s critics will certainly find that his New Year’s resolution comes across a bit vain.
While his play is a big reason for the Panthers’ success over the last year and a half, some football fans don’t not enjoy his frequent touchdown celebrations, like hitting the dab or handing touchdown footballs to kids in the stands with Panthers jerseys on.
His team is certainly poised to contend for a Super Bowl this January, but it still needs to win at least three more games to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in Santa Clara. The Panthers have never won a Super Bowl in their 21-year existence, losing their only opportunity to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Newton’s Panthers will have to stay hungry once the playoffs start. Though they have a week off after Sunday’s Week 17 home game versus the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina will surely get a strong team in their Divisional Round in Charlotte on January 17th.
