2. Herman is great with quarterbacks

While the University of Houston already has a great history with quarterbacks (Andre Ware, Kevin Kolb, Case Keenum, etc.), Tom Herman has a great track record as well with passers. Since leaving Iowa State for Ohio State in 2012 to become the Buckeyes’ newest offensive coordinator, Herman was worked with Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones, and now Greg Ward, Jr. in Houston.

Being able to win a National Championship using three different starting quarterbacks during a season is unheard of, but that is what Herman did at Ohio State in 2014 as part of Urban Meyer’s staff in Columbus. Ward is becoming the next great passer for the Cougars and Herman supposedly spoke with former Texas A&M five-star quarterback Kyle Allen about transferring to Houston and starting in 2017.

If Herman was willing to take the time to potentially persuade Allen about a starting gig in the Group of 5 two years from now, that could mean that Herman loves being in Houston and believes that the Cougars will inevitably get a Big 12 invitation in the next few years.

Texas has not had competent quarterback play since Colt McCoy graduated several years ago. The air raid offenses of Baylor, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech often recruit great passers. While Gary Patterson is a defense-first coach, he does have Andy Dalton starting for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL and Trevone Boykin as a Heisman hopeful the last two seasons.

The best way to turn a football program around or at least get the fans excited is to install a great offense. Herman can do that better than Texas at the moment, as current head coach Charlie Strong is a defense-first coach. The State of Texas produces a ton of arm talent and its flagship university shouldn’t play second fiddle to anybody in that regard for much longer. Herman could help bring offensive credibility back to Austin if hired by the Longhorns.
