The Montreal Canadiens outskated and outplayed the Boston Bruins to win the 2016 Winter Classic.

The Montreal Canadiens entered the 2016 Winter Classic having lost eight out of their last 10 games. Getting back superstar forward Brendan Gallagher gave the Canadiens quite the lift however. Gallagher was one of four Canadiens to score in the 2016 Winter Classic as the Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins, 5-1. The Canadiens got a goal from Gallagher, Max Pacioretty, and David Desharnais and two from Paul Byron. The Boston Bruins lone goal came from forward Matt Beleskey.

Next: Desharnais gives Habs 1-0 Lead

The Montreal Canadiens dominated the game from the opening whistle. Desharnais scored just 74 seconds into the matchup. 120 seconds into the second period, Paul Byron scored his first goal of the game as the Canadiens outskated and outperformed the Bruins. Gallagher added a second period goal while Pacioretty and Byron each added goals in the third period.

Three Stars

Paul Byron of the Canadiens was phenomenal for the Canadiens. He scored two goals and he was the Habs best player all game. Brendan Gallagher had a goal and an assist in his first game back from injury and his return really gave the Canadiens a huge lift. Mike Condon, whose hometown is Boston, only allowed one goal on 28 shots on goal. He’s got to feel great putting on that performance in the 2016 Winter Classic.

Highlights

Odds

The Bruins were the favorites entering the game. The over/under for the game was set at 5.5 so if you bet the over, you won since the two teams combined for six goals.

Next Game

The Bruins will face the Washington Capitals on January 5th at home in their next game as they look to rebound from a poor 2015 Winter Classic showing. The Canadiens will continue their road trip as they face the Philadelphia Flyers in Philly.
