The NHL has announced that Alex Ovechkin, Jaromir Jagr, Patrick Kane, and John Scott have been voted as the 2016 NHL All Star Game captains.

The 2016 NHL All Star Game will have a different format this season. Instead of having two teams face each other, the NHL has decided to take advantage of the new and exciting three-on-three overtime format by making the 2016 NHL All Star Game a three-on-three tournament between the four divisions. Fans voted for the captains for each division who will help to choose the rest of the All-Stars. The rest of the All-Stars will be announced on Wednesday, January 6th.

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin will captain the Metropolitan Division team. Ovechkin has 21 goals on the season and has helped lead the Caps to the best record in the Eastern Conference. He was an obvious choice because not only is he the league’s best goal scorer, he’s also extremely entertaining and fans want to see him play.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane will captain the Central Division team. He had a record point streak this season and currently leads the league in points and assists. Florida Panthers ageless wonder Jaromir Jagr will captain the Atlantic Division team. Jagr was born to play three-on-three hockey and jokingly asking fans to not vote for him probably just made fans want to vote for him even more.

The biggest surprise was Arizona Coyotes forward John Scott being voted as the Pacific Division captain. There were social media campaigns out there to get Scott into the All Star game as sort of a joke. Scott might not be a great player, but it’s not the worst thing in the world that a guy like Scott who is extremely active in charities and community work gets more attention.
