Fenway Park hosted the 2016 Winter Classic and soon could be hosting another unique sporting event for a baseball field.
If the Boston Celtics get their way, then Fenway Park could be the host of one of their games in the near future. This news comes days after Fenway hosted the 2016 Winter Classic and a college football game this past season.
Celtics president Rich Gotham told The Boston Globe about the idea to host a game at the iconic grounds.
"“I’ve gotten into it. I really like the idea,” Gotham told the Globe. “I think if you can find a way to sort of differentiate the game and make it fun for fans, that’s a great thing. And the Winter Classic certainly does that.“Even when Fenway stages certain events, like football games, it just makes it more special for people involved and the fans. I think if you can do it, great. At the same time, my job requires me to be pragmatic, so you’d need to look at the hurdles.”"
Yet, unlike with concerts, football games, and hockey, basketball has it’s own challenges. If it rains or is really humid out, then the flooring could get damage. On top of that a wet surface isn’t safe for basketball purposes and could lead to injuries.
Nonetheless, seeing a basketball games at a historic venue like Fenway Park would be worth the risks. The NBA and the Celtics will just need to make sure they have a contingency plan in place and are able to wipe up any liquid that may fall from the sky or seeps onto the court. If the Celtics were to have a rain delay, it would make it feel like a Boston Red Sox game. Hopefully, the peanut and cracker jacks vendor will be stopping around.
No date has been set in stone for the game, but it’s a possibility the Celtics could one day play a game at Fenway Park.
