The New York Giants fired Tom Coughlin.

The New York Giants and head coach Tom Coughlin are parting ways after two Super Bowl titles and 12 seasons at the helm. New York has not made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots back in Feb. 2012. Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the confirmation.

Coughlin might be a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He took over the Jacksonville Jaguars when they were an expansion team in 1995, and one year later had them playing in the AFC Championship Game in 1996 against the Patriots. Jacksonville would once again reach the conference title game again, only to lose to the Tennessee Titans.

Once with the Giants, Coughlin reached the playoffs on four consecutive years from 2005-2008, beating New England in 2007 to spoil its undefeated season. The game remains one of the biggest upsets in pro football history. However, three straight losing seasons have sunk Coughlin, along with the prevailing idea that the team needs a new voice to lead the way.

At 69 years old, Coughlin was the oldest head coach in the league. It will be tough for Coughlin to land a job at this point, even if he wants to stay in the game, due to long-term goals.
