Only give Gregg Popovich Coach of the Month if he gets something as a reward for his troubles
The San Antonio Spurs have been quietly one of the most dominant teams in the NBA through the first two months of the 2015-16 season, but their month of December was incredibly dominant. The Spurs went 14-2 over the last month of 2015 and firmly put themselves right on the heels of the Golden State Warriors. For his troubles leading the Spurs to that place and record, the NBA handed down Western Conference Coach of the Month honors for December to Gregg Popovich.
All the legendary San Antonio head coach wants to know is why he should care about that, though, when he’s not getting a new ride.
On Monday after being given the award, Pop was asked about the honor by the media and had a classic response that only he could ever hope to pull off:
As there’s no car attached to Coach of the Month honors in the NBA, suffice it to say that Popovich really doesn’t “give a damn” about the whole thing.
If any other coach in the NBA (or almost any sport) were to react this way to any question when talking to the media. The fact that Popovich can respond like this—and do so frequently—and just have everyone laugh and take it in stride is really a testament to how great of a coach he is, how important he is to the Spurs and the league, and just how damn funny the man is.
