Regular season grades for every NFL team
The 2015 regular season was pretty much set to be a struggle from Jump Street for the San Francisco 49ers. After all of the losses that they suffered on the defensive side of the ball in the offseason (for a variety of reasons), their biggest strength became a weakness and their shaky offense had less of a margin for error. Subsequently, things were less than promising at the start and played out as such.
Colin Kaepernick started the year at quarterback, but was yanked midway through the season and it now appears that his time in San Francisco is over. Moreover, Carlos Hyde was sidelined for the majority of the year with a foot injury, further limiting the offense. And while Blaine Gabbert performed better than anyone who saw him play in Jacksonville could have ever predicted, there’s no doubt that the lack of offensive weapons really was the biggest weakness for a bad 49ers team.
This team wasn’t ever going to be any good this season; they had simply undergone too many changes without a fallback plan for that to not be the case. However, they avoid a failing grade for picking up five wins in spite of their struggles and from moving away from a situation in Kaepernick that seemed to have them stuck in the mire. That’s at least something positive to take away for a team that didn’t have many positive things going on.
