Sean Payton is monitoring the New York Giants’ head coaching situation “very closely” after they fired Tom Coughlin.

In the biggest firing of the day, Tom Coughlin has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the New York Giants. Let the rumor mill begin.

One of the biggest name coaches who may possibly available is the current head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton. Payton has been one of the most successful coaches of the past decade, winning the Super Bowl with his Saints in 2009, and is now monitoring the Giants’ coaching situation.

However, after two consecutive losing seasons, his job has come under great scrutiny from fans and analysts alike. New Orleans were utterly terrible this season. Their defense was one of the worst in the league, and even with Drew Brees under center, the offense could not overcome such shortcomings on the other side of the ball.

Whether Payton will keep his job or not is yet to be decided, although his position is far from secure. Such is rotational nature of coaching in the NFL, Payton is already sounding out potential landing spots if he is to indeed find himself out the door in New Orleans. The Giants would be a great landing spot, if Payton so chooses.

With Eli Manning conducting the offense, the Giants already have a franchise quarterback, an explosive receiving corps and top-quality infrastructure. However, like New Orleans, the defense is what let New York down this year. It is a tantalizing prospect for any coach looking for a new role, and Payton clearly sees himself as a possible future Giants’ head coach.
