Sean Payton worth second round pick to Saints
Current New Orleans Saints’ head coach Sean Payton would be worth a 2nd round draft pick if traded for.
The rumors on Sean Payton’s future have been flying around all year long. The New Orleans Saints have failed to make the postseason for the second consecutive season, and after a win in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, finished 7-9. It was certainly a disappointing year for Payton and the Saints, who were completely overshadowed by Cam Newton and his Carolina Panthers in the AFC South.
The defense is the biggest weakness of this team right now. The secondary is utterly terrible, allowing 284 passing yards per game and the rushing defense isn’t much better, allowing 129 rushing yards per game. They are unacceptable numbers for any side, and the defense has simply been to much to overcome for Drew Brees and his offense.
Payton’s job is under great scrutiny, and with firings already taking place in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Cleveland, there are plenty of opportunities for a coach of Payton’s quality. However, New Orleans may well not fire Payton yet, and see what value they can get for their Super Bowl winning coach. Per Ian Rapoport, the Saints are hoping for a 2nd round pick for Payton.
A head coach has not been traded since Jon Gruden was acquired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. The high stakes trade that saw Tampa Bay give the Oakland Raiders two first rounders, two second rounders and $8 million is one of the biggest trades in NFL history. However, Gruden brought home a Super Bowl ring just one year later, and Payton would give any organization an experienced NFL head coach.
