How many National Championships has Alabama won in college football?

The Alabama Crimson Tide will be facing the Clemson Tigers on Monday, January 11th at the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona for the College Football Playoff National Title in college football. Alabama has won 19 national titles and they will be seeking their 20th national title.

Now, 15 of their 19 national titles have been claimed while four of them have been unclaimed. Four of their claimed national titles have come within the last seven years.

Alabama has won claimed national titles in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, and 2012.Wallace Wade was their head coach for their first three national titles in 1925, 1926, and 1930. They won with Frank Thomas as their head coach in 1934 and 1941.

Their titles in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, and 1979 were won with legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. They won the 1992 national championship with Gene Stallings as their head coach. Current head coach Nick Saban has won titles in 2009, 2011, and most recently 2012.

Stallings, Bryant, Wade, and Thomas are all members of the College Football Hall of Fame and it can be assumed that Saban will one day be inducted as well. A victory on Monday would bring them to 16 official national titles.

But what about the unclaimed titles? Those are titles that Bama does not acknowledge as national titles but the NCAA acknowledges them as the national champions during those years despite that. Alabama only acknowledges titles that were awarded to them by the final AP Poll or the final Coaches’ Poll. That might sound a little sketchy, but it’s consistent with what many other storied programs go by.

Monday would also be Nick Saban’s fourth national title. That would put him alone in second place to Bear Bryant as far as national championships won with the Crimson Tide as their head coach.
