Power ranking the NFL head coach openings
4. San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are a team that will be appealing to coaches based on name, a few key players in place and the draft picks that they will have to build for the future. Unfortunately, the front office might be the reason that coaches stay clear of San Francisco.
CEO Jed York has now fired two coaches in two years in San Francisco, and it was clear from the beginning that he should have never hired Jim Tomsula to be the next head coach of the team. General manager Trent Baalke isn’t completely absolved from the situation either, but he has shown that he can be effective with the right coach.
The 49ers are a far better situation than the Cleveland Browns are in, but like the Browns, they suffer from executive instability. When there’s problems at the top of an organization, it trickles down to the head coach and ultimately the team.
If York and Baalke are on thin ice, it’s going to be hard for a coach to commit to the 49ers. Knowing that the executives hiring the new head coach could soon be gone should make candidates weary of the job, as they know that anyone that steps in as a potential new executive could very well want to bring in their own guys for head coach.
If San Francisco can promise stability and show that they plan on keeping guys in the front office in place, then this could become a much more appealing option for candidates.
