Calvin Johnson is reportedly serious about retiring, giving more credit to all of the rumors.

Wednesday was a weird day in the NFL, as Sean Payton stayed put as the Saints head coach despite the rumors that he was going to be traded. But what ended up making ht e day truly bizarre were rumors that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was considering retiring from football.

Lions fans have already lived through one Hall of Fame player quitting before his time was up, as the Barry Sanders flashbacks are already coming flooding back. Of course, Johnson hasn’t filed for retirement and is merely thinking about it — which is leading some to believe that the rumors are all bogus.

According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network though, Megatron is reportedly so serious about retiring that he’s been talking to his teammates for weeks about it.

This isn’t what Lions fans want to hear, as having Johnson quit on the Lions less than 20 years after Barry Sanders hung it up for similar reasons is almost too  much to bare. It’s worth stressing that Johnson hasn’t said he’s going to retire, and he has at least $12 million reasons to stick around and as much as over $20 million dollars at stake.

Detroit is rumored to be considering cutting him to save cap space, but if Johnson retires than he gets none of the money that is owed to him. It’s a situation that isn’t close to being resolved but it’s no doubt gong to weigh heavy as the Lions offseason begins.
