Why did Cam Newton name his son Chosen?
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton decided to share why he named his son Chosen.
Cam Newton became the father of a baby boy this week and caught everyone’s attention when he and his girlfriend decided to choose the name Chosen.
While it’s certainly a grand name and one of extreme confidence, Newton explained why he and his girlfriend decided on the name for their son.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Newton told them that he didn’t want to put too much pressure on his young son and make him a junior.
"“I wanted something that would be masculine, but yet unique,” he told reporters. “I’m not a big fan of juniors and every person that I’ve had this conversation when I say ‘I don’t want to have the pressure of him being a junior’, they reply, ‘what the hell do you think Chosen’s going to bring?’”“I wanted something that would be masculine, but yet unique,” he told reporters. “I’m not a big fan of juniors and every person that I’ve had this conversation when I say ‘I don’t want to have the pressure of him being a junior’, they reply, ‘what the hell do you think Chosen’s going to bring?’”"
While the name ‘Chosen’ will certainly bring pressures of its own, Newton’s point about not naming his son after himself makes a lot of sense.
There have been plenty of examples in sports where famous athletes will name their sons after themselves, only for their offspring not living up to the hype in sports like their father did.
Chosen is going to have plenty of hype when he does grow up because of his name and his father, but his dad wants to make sure that he carves out his own path rather than being expected to live in his same footsteps as a junior. It’s also a rather unique name, which is a lot like Newton’s style of play on the field every week.
The name for his son might be a grand one, but Newton really put a lot of thought into it and that separates himself from plenty of other celebrities and athletes.
