Liverpool concede a corner against Exeter City in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
The magic of the FA Cup is alive and well. Perhaps the only competition in the world, where a true minnow can take down a giant of the game, and people simply say, “well, that’s the FA Cup.” It’s not unusual to see giant killings, and this Friday, yet another upset is on the cards after a truly remarkable goal.
The Friday game, the first of the third round of the FA Cup being played over the weekend, was carefully balanced. After Exeter took a surprise lead in the ninth minute through a toe-poke finish from Tom Nichols, Liverpool quickly equalized as youngster Jerome Sinclair slotted the ball away calmly after Exeter failed to clear.
The game, however, is truly back on, after a stunning Exeter goal. Just before half time, the League Two side forced a corner, and from the resulting corner, midfielder Lee Holmes, with an in swinging corner, utilized the swirling wind and floated the ball over a flapping Adam Bogdan and into the far corner.
Whether Exeter can hang on for a famous victory remains to be seen. The biggest 45 minutes of many of their players’ careers remains, and if they could hang on, it would truly be one of the most incredible results in English football. Exeter are 76 places behind the Merseyside giants, and in the same mold as Bradford City last year, are on the verge of completing one of the biggest upsets ever seen.
