Blues’ Kevin Shattenkirk on the move?
Could the St. Louis Blues possibly deal defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk?
The Fourth Period is reporting that the St. Louis Blues are open to the idea of trading their star defenseman, Kevin Shattenkirk for a top forward prior to the NHL Trade Deadline on February 29.
In late January, Shattenkirk turns 27 and has a year left on his contract. He has 25 points in his first 34 contests this year scoring eight goals and 17 assists. The former first round selection of the 2007 NHL Draft was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche. In his rookie year in Denver, during the 2010-11 season, he had 26 points in 46 games. He is currently in the middle of his sixth season for the Blues organization and been a fixture on the blue line. The 2013-14 campaign was his career best where he had 45 points in 81 contests.
The Blues organization have been in contention for the division lead of the Central Division and always strong candidates to win a Stanley Cup. There is a lot of talent on this team and certainly within their defense core that is quite strong. The men that are on the blue line are Alex Pietrangelo, Jay Bouwmeester, Carl Gunnarsson and rookie phenom Colton Parayko.
The Blues have been involved in various discussions trying to obtain a star forward. A name that they have been linked to is the Tampa Bay Lightning disgruntled forward Jonathan Drouin. The Fourth Period speculates that if Drouin is dealt to Missouri with Shattenkirk heading the other direction, it would have to be part of a larger deal.
The NHL Trade Deadline is a very exciting time for hockey fans as anything can happen. There has already been a significant trade this season where the Columbus Blue Jackets dealt Ryan Johansen to the Nashville Predators and proved that significant trades can occur during the salary cap era.
Shattenkirk may or may not be dealt prior to the deadline. However, the Blue Jackets and Predators deal has proven that anything can happen and exciting times are ahead.
