What are the five worst playoff losses in NFL history?

The National Football League has seen plenty of playoff games during its existence. It has seen countless soul-crushing and tear-inducing losses. Every fan base would like to forget at least one playoff game that their team has lost because the loss was just so terrible. The score is not relevant. Sometimes blowouts can be horrible. Sometimes close games can be even more painful than blowouts. You could argue that for some playoff losses, a blowout loss would have been better than the end result.

Before the list begins, let’s start with some honorable mentions.

  1. Colts lose to the Jets in Super Bowl III. The Colts came into the Super Bowl as clear favorites as the NFL was more highly thought of back in the late 60’s than the AFL. The Jets win hurt Colts fans even more because Joe Namath guaranteed the victory before hand.
  2. The Immaculate Reception. It must really suck to lose a playoff game because of one of the most fluky, lucky plays in NFL history, but that’s what Raiders fans sign up for when they decide to root for them.
  3. Super Bowl XLVII. Talk about getting your heart ripped out. 49ers fans had to watch their team come back from a huge deficit only to fall JUST short.
