5) The MVP

You may not like Cam Newton’s personality or his theatrics out on the field but there’s no denying that he’s been the NFL’s Most Valuable Player this season. Having the league’s best player will surely come in handy for the Panthers during the playoffs.

The scary thing for the rest of the league is that Newton will actually become a more dangerous quarterback during the Panthers’ playoff run. Coach Ron Rivera won’t need to worry about saving Newton’s body for the long haul anymore. The Carolina coaching staff will feel free to unleash the full Cam Newton playbook on their playoff opponents.

Most concerning for opposing defenses will be trying to account for Newton as a runner. He’s good in the air, but his ability to move the ball on the ground is what makes him special. He has the ability to absolutely break his opponents’ backs by making something out of nothing on the ground.

In the regular season, the Panthers had to be watchful of how many hits Newton took. As a result, they ran him less than they will in the winner-take-all playoffs. That could spell big trouble for the rest of the NFL.
