According to a report, the New York Giants have given the San Francisco 49ers permission to interview Tom Coughlin.

When Tom Coughlin stepped down after 12 seasons as head coach of the New York Giants, many thought it was the end of the line for a fantastic coaching career. However, it became clear quickly right away that Coughlin wasn’t done coaching yet and he’s been linked to multiple teams.

With the Giants needing to give teams to permission to interview Coughlin since he stepped down with time on his contract left, they could be choosy about the teams they let interview their former head coach.

According to Mike Garafolo, the Giants have given permission to the San Francisco 49ers to interview Coughlin for their head coaching position.

The 49ers know after the debacle that was the Jim Tomsula hiring, that they have to nail their next hire or it could lead to a major change on the executive side of things. Coughlin comes with the championship pedigree and would certainly be a big hire for the 49ers.

The question is whether or not Coughlin would want the job in San Francisco. With uncertainty up top, it could lead to a coach worrying about stability and whether there are long term prospects with the organization. Coughlin has succeeded at every stop in his coaching career and it would be interesting to see if he could still be one of the top coaches in the league with a roster that needs a lot of work.

He has the pedigree to succeed in San Francisco if he were to end up there and he could be exactly what the 49ers currently need for their roster. If he could get a young quarterback in the draft and bring in some talent in free agency and with the bevy of draft picks that the team will have, it could potentially be a quicker turnaround for the 49ers then many people expect.
