New GM Bob Quinn says he will meet with head coach Jim Caldwell in “the next couple of days” to determine fate.

Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood has left the fate of head coach Jim Caldwell in the hands of new general manager Bob Quinn, but no choice has been made. However, according to at least one source, Quinn’s decision should come shortly after he meets with Caldwell sometime in “the next couple of days.”

It’s an important first test for Quinn, who gave his introductory news conference on Monday. If he fires Caldwell, it will be up to him to find an immediate upgrade at the position or risk looking like he made the wrong decision. Likewise, if he decides to retain Caldwell and the Lions don’t show improvement next season, Quinn could face substantial criticism for not letting him go.

To his credit, the new GM has made it clear that he wants to perform his due diligence on Caldwell before jumping to any conclusions, hence his desire to meet with the embattled NFL coach face-to-face and get to know him better.

Caldwell is 18-15 in his two-year tenure with the Lions. He previously was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts for three seasons before being replaced by Chuck Pagano.
