Mark Rypien’s Super Bowl XXII championship ring up for auction
Former Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien won two Super Bowls during his career and one of them has recently been put up for auction
Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien won two Super Bowl rings during his career. He is famous for being the first NFL quarterback born in Canada and the first to win a Super Bowl. He led the Redskins to a win in Super Bowl XXVI. Back in 2013, Rypien sold his Super Bowl XXII championship ring. The person who bought the ring has put up for auction.
From TMZ:
"Rypien’s championship ring from Super Bowl XXII is up for grabs via Goldin Auctions — starting bid is $15,000.Of course, Rypien didn’t play a single down in that game — when Washington beat Denver 42-10 — ’cause he was only a rookie back then … playing behind Doug Williams and Jay Schroeder."
The ring is expected to fetch in excess of $50,000 according to TMZ. It’s understandable that Rypien would sell his Super Bowl XXII championship ring. He wasn’t really a part of the team. Plus, he won another Super Bowl with them in Super Bowl XXVI and was voted the MVP of the game. He likely wouldn’t have sold it had Super Bowl XXII been his only championship. Winning more than one Super Bowl certainly gives you options.
Mark Rypien passed for 18,473 passing yards during his career with 118 touchdowns in 104 games (78 starts). He also threw 88 interceptions. He spent eight seasons with the Redskins before playing for the Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts.
