Blair Walsh and the 10 worst kicker moments in NFL playoff history
By David Rouben
1. Scott Norwood – Super Bowl XXV
The field goal that has inspired countless documentaries, nowadays, you can’t even hear the term “wide right” without thinking about Scott Norwood. There have been many heartbreaking moments for the Buffalo Bills, but perhaps none came to define them more than Scott Norwood’s missed field goal.
In the first of four successive Super Bowl trips for the Bills, all of which ended in losses, there was no better chance for them to win it than against the Giants. Thurman Thomas had the game of his life, and Jim Kelly didn’t commit a single turnover, yet Scott Norwood was the only reason the Bills didn’t walk out of Tampa Stadium with the Lombardi Trophy.
It’s not like Scott Norwood was a bum either. He propelled the team to an AFC East title in 1980 and became the team’s all-time leading scorer ahead of O.J. Simpson. The Bills decided to keep Norwood next season, and once again he was pivotal in their run to the Super Bowl – he even made a field goal in the AFC Championship game against Denver.
But perhaps no other kicker will come to be defined by a field goal miss moreso than Scott Norwood. Of all the misses on this list, this one came on the biggest stage with the most on the line. The Bills haven’t come anywhere as close to winning the Super Bowl ever since, and unfortunately for Norwood, wide right is a label he’ll never be able to get rid of.
