Blair Walsh and the 10 worst kicker moments in NFL playoff history

4. Doug Brien – Jets vs. Steelers, 2005
(WARNING: The above video is NSFW)
The Jets, right? In a game where kicking a field goal would’ve brought the Jets to the AFC Championship Game to set up a highly anticipated matchup with the Patriots, Doug Brien instead missed two field goals in the final two minutes of regulation. Once it got to overtime, the Steelers won by a solitary 3 points.
Steelers fans probably got a bit of karma this season when the exact same thing happened to their kicker at the start of the season, Josh Scobee. Of course, it’s not the same because it wasn’t in the AFC Divisional Round, but you get the point. The first miss came from 47 yards out. That’s excusable because that distance is hardly a gimme and the Jets got the ball back after David Barrett’s interception brought the Jets to Pittsburgh’s 36-yard line. His second attempt, from 43 yards out, is what cost his team the game and caused the reaction in the above video.
Although the Jets, seeded number 5, shouldn’t have expected to play so well against the top-seeded Steelers, and for Roethlisberger to have such a bad game, that still doesn’t excuse the fact that they blew two chances to win the game. Unsurprisingly, Doug Brien was released by the team after the game before he was subsequently picked up and released by the Chicago Bears.
