What the Top 10 rankings could look like following Kansas’ loss to West Virginia

The No. 1-ranked Kansas Jayhawks started off a torrid Big 12 schedule last week when they took on the No. 2-ranked Oklahoma Sooners and toppled them in a thrilling overtime affair. However, Bill Self and his group of young men weren’t so fortunate on Tuesday night as they went into Morgantown and were taken down by the West Virginia Mountaineers.

West Virginia absolutely took care of their home floor and put a beating to No. 1 on Tuesday night. They were the better team on the court from the opening tip until the final buzzer and proved that they are for real as a one-loss team in college basketball.

With the statement win for West Virginia and with No. 1 Kansas losing on Tuesday night, though, the rankings are surely going to get shaken up in a major way. Though there’s still plenty of basketball left to be played this week, here’s what the Top 10 rankings could look like after this Kansas loss:

  1. Oklahoma Sooners
  2. Maryland Terrapins
  3. Michigan State Spartans
  4. North Carolina Tar Heels
  5. West Virginia Mountaineers
  6. Kansas Jayhawks
  7. Villanova Wildcats
  8. Xavier Musketeers
  9. Miami Hurricanes
  10. Duke Blue Devils

The win over Kansas is almost certainly enough to vault West Virginia well into the Top 10 rankings and the Mountaineers should wind up leaping several teams and reaching the Top 5 with only one loss on their record (sorry, SMU). Kansas will certainly drop well below the top spot, but it’s hard to imagine them falling too far considering that this is only their second loss and their other quality wins on the season to date.

We’ll see just how shaken up the Top 10 gets after the Jayhawks loss, but there’s no doubt that things will get a little bit crazy in the rankings after this result.
