The Brooklyn Nets reportedly have their eyes on former Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo for their new front office vacancy.
ESPN’s Marc Stein and Mike Mazzeo write that the Brooklyn Nets may want to pursue the former general manager of the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors Bryan Colangelo as the Nets’ next general manager.
Brooklyn shook up their front office a few days ago when owner Mikhail Prokhorov fired head coach Lionel Hollins mid-season and demoted former general manager Billy King Sunday. Brooklyn’s front office is in dire need for a massive overhaul, as King’s decision making has ultimately taken a theoretical contender and turned the Nets into one of the four worst teams in the NBA.
The Nets are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference and don’t own their 2016 NBA Draft Lottery pick, as their Atlantic Division rival has the rights to swap first round picks this summer. King unwisely allowed the pick swap to be unprotected in the deal two years ago to acquire Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry from Boston, all of whom are no longer with the team.
Essentially, Brooklyn is bound to be a bad basketball team for the next several years, so it would make sense to hire a two-time NBA Executive of the Year in Colangelo to try to sort out this quagmire the former Nets’ front office put themselves in.
Colangelo last worked for the Raptors organization in the 2012-13 NBA season, but his reputation of putting together strong rebuilds and ultimately strong products in both Phoenix and Toronto is something the Nets certainly have interest in.
Whatever Brooklyn decides to do, they need to have a well thought out plan about how the front office can field a competitive product while it tries to undo all the madness King and company created the last few years under Prokhorov.
