The Miami Marlins have extended second baseman Dee Gordon for five years with a sixth-year option
The Miami Marlins continue their busy offseason so far by extending second baseman and 2015 National League hits leader Dee Gordon for five seasons. A sixth-year vesting option is included in the deal.

Gordon will average $10,000,000 a year for the first five years of the deal. Should the sixth-year option vest, he will average $10,666,667 per season. That’s a very good deal for the Marlins as they are getting one of the best second basemen in the league at an extremely reasonable price.
Dee Gordon was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Marlins last offseason with Dan Haren, and Miguel Rojas for Austin Barnes, Chris Hatcher, Andrew Heaney and Enrique Hernandez. It appears that the Marlins have found a gem in Gordon. He had a league-high .333 batting average in 2015 and also led the league in hits (205) and stolen bases (58).
The Marlins can’t stop here. They must commit to their players long-term and they have to see the process to the end. The last time the Marlins spent a ton of money, they spent it on Jose Reyes, Heath Bell, and Mark Buehrle. They wound up shipping all three out within a year of signing them.
It remains to be seen if this contains a no-trade clause.
