Demaryius Thomas’ mom could finally see him play

There is a good chance that the mom of wide receiver Demaryius Thomas will get to see him play for the first time Sunday.

There’s going to be quite the physical battle in Denver on Sunday, when the Denver Broncos play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers. For a variety of reasons, both teams come limping into the game and there’s a chance that many of the star players that would normally play in this AFC Divisional showdown won’t.

One player that will be playing on Sunday, is Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Thomas hasn’t quite had the season that many have expected him to in 2015, but the playoffs are a great time for him to grab the bull by the horns and put on a big performance to carry his team to the AFC Championship.

While Thomas has played in plenty of big games and has had many notable moments in Denver, he has never played a game live in front of his mom. According to the USA Today, Thomas has never played in front of his mom because she had spent 20 years in prison for drug trafficking.

"Thomas’ mother, Katina Smith, was released from prison after her 20-year sentence for drug trafficking was commuted by President Obama. She has since been released from a Georgia halfway house and Thomas said a ban restricting her ability to travel has now been lifted.Smith, who was arrested in 1999, when Thomas was 11, has never seen her son play a football game in person."

Her son knows just how much it would mean to him to have his mom at the big game at home on Sunday.

"Now Thomas is working on the logistics to get his mother to Denver for the first time in time for Sunday’s divisional round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.“I know she’d be excited. It’d mean a lot for her to see my first game live,” Thomas said Wednesday."

While there have been many examples of athletes before that have never gotten to play in front of their parents because they were in jail or prison, it would be nice for Thomas if he had his mother there in Denver to support him after she had served her time.

The Broncos are going to need to provide Peyton Manning with all the help that he can get on Sunday, if they’re going to advance. Thomas has to be one of those guys that steps up and makes the big plays to help ensure a victory for the Broncos.

With mom in attendance, that might give him plenty of motivation to do so.
