Arsenal and Liverpool share the points with incredible 3-3 draw.
What a game this was. League leaders Arsenal traveled to Jurgen Klopp’s rejuvenated Liverpool to try to keep the pressure up at the top of the table. After a break from Premier League football over the weekend due to the FA Cup 3rd round, it was nice to see two top quality face up to each other in this ding-dong battle of a game.
Liverpool started on top, with Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing game causing Arsenal all sorts of problems. The midfield trio of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana, who had moved inside with James Milner sliding wide, dominated the opening periods, and Roberto Firmino was the benefactor of such dominance, opening the scoring with a neat near post finish, and then adding a second with a beautifully curled shot from outside the area.
Before the Brazilian’s second goal, however, Arsenal were able to equalize through midfield man Aaron Ramsey. Joel Campbell played a lovely reverse ball to release the Welshman, and Ramsey beat Simon Mignolet way to easily at his near post. The goals did not stop there, as Giroud equalized for a second time for Arsenal, flicking in a corner at the near post, but later missed an absolute sitter.
In the second half, Arsenal began to get the better of the game, dominating possession. Liverpool still posed a threat on the break, but Arsenal showed why they are the current league leaders. On the 55th minute, Arsenal’s superior play culminated in a beautifully taken goal from Giroud, as he received the ball from Joel Campbell, Kruyff-turned inside and whipped the ball into the bottom corner to put Arsenal in the lead for the first time.
Liverpool had the better of the final 20 minutes, with Arsenal sitting further and further back, happy to sit on the one goal lead. Wenger brought on Kieran Gibbs and Mikel Arteta to shore up defensively. However, it was to be in vain. Joe Allen came off the bench for Jurgen Klopp’s men, to volley home a Christian Benteke cushioned header.
