2. Mat Latos
The 6’ 6” 245 pound right-hander is an opposing figure on the mound and has a lot to offer to any team looking for starting pitching but not without question marks. There is no questioning his stuff, he attacks hitters with an over-the-top arm angle and features a mid-90’s fastball, one of the games best sliders, a curveball, and change-up, making him a difficult matchup for both left and right-handed hitters. Latos had a lot of success during the 2010-2013 seasons’ when he was able to limit his walks and attack hitters. He posted a 4.1 WAR in 2012 and a 3.8 WAR in 2013 and was the ace of the Cincinnati Red’s playoff teams.
Injuries limited Latos in 2014 and a change of scenery to his native Miami Marlins in 2015 was a complete disaster as he went 4-7 and posted a 4.48 ERA before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers where he went 0-3 with a 6.66 ERA. Reports also surfaced of Latos lack of effort and bad attitude raising a few red flags. Regardless, at twenty-eight years old Latos is a high-ceiling signing but not without risk for any team in need of starting pitching. The Red Sox, Royals, Dodgers, and Brewers could be potential landing spots.
