Spectre, Sam Smith Earn Oscar Nomination
By Alex Brannan
Recent Golden Globe winner Sam Smith has just received an Academy Award nomination.
On Jan. 10, Sam Smith won a Golden Globe for his contribution to the 2015 James Bond film Spectre.
The singer was next in line to continue the tradition of having a crooning theme song at the front of each Bond film.
The song, “Writing’s on the Wall,” was a huge success, becoming the first Bond theme to break number one on the United Kingdom singles chart. Following its success, the song shared the path of its 2012 counterpart, the eponymous theme from Skyfall, by winning a Golden Globe.

I have said it before, and I will reiterate myself here: I don’t think Smith’s theme lives up to Adele’s “Skyfall,” not by a long shot. It is fine for what it is, probably finding itself somewhere near the middle of the pack when it comes to the 24 Bond themes. As such, I was surprised to see it win the Golden Globe.
What are Spectre‘s chances of seeing Oscar gold for a second installment in a row? (Skyfall won two Academy Awards in 2013)
The song finds itself up against competition from the likes of The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, and eight-time nominee Diane Warren. Winning will be tough for Smith and the Spectre party, but coming in with the Golden Globe is certainly a leg up.
Diane Warren and Lady Gaga’s song from The Hunting Ground was notably absent from the Golden Globes. This could mean something, but the Academy has a history of siding with a song that the Hollywood Foreign Press previously snubbed. This happened in the 2011 and 2012 ceremonies.
It is also important to note that the Golden Globes and the Oscars have only shared the same Best Original Song winner three times out of the last 10 years. So Smith isn’t a shoe in to win just because of his Globes win.
